Complete hygiene behind fountain soft drinks at Cinemas

Fontus Water supplies RO Plants with UV for all ‘Big Cinemas’ Theatres

New Delhi, November 3, 2010
Reverse osmosis (RO) is the most economical method of removing 90% to 99% of all contaminants. It is highly effective in removing several impurities from water such as total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity, pesticides, lead and other toxic heavy metals, radium, and many dissolved organics.

Fontus Water has signed an agreement with Big Cinemas (formerly Adlabs Cinemas), India’s fastest growing and the largest multiplex chain to supply Reverse Osmosis Plants to all Adlab Cinema Theatres being set up in the country. After the first RO Plant of 100 Litres per Hour was supplied to Galaxy Adlabs, Jaipur, Fontus Water has till date supplied over 60 RO plants in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. These 100 Litres per Hour RO Plants with the added UV treatment would be used to purify water for carbonated drink dispensers for a leading soft drink major and for making ice. The plant is looped to the water tank and automatically stops when the desired level is reached. The concept of using RO Plants is a new approach than the earlier use of mineral water bottles or the UV Filtration from a water inlet making the water completely safe.

A typical soft drink dispenser uses a cylinder of carbon dioxide gas at a pressure of as much as 3000 psi depending on the temperature. The gas is fed to a container of water called the carbonator, a regulator on the cylinder lowers the pressure on the gas to about 70 psi. The carbonated water is pumped through the lines of the system through a cooling unit and delivered to the dispensing heads of which fountain drinks mix carbonated water and the syrup when you press the button. Simply by pulling the handle, the syrup and carbonated water were mixed together.

The birth of the soda fountain began with the drug revolution of the 1850’s. People would go to the local drugstore and procure a fountain drink to cure or aid some physical malady. But it wasn’t until Jacob Baur began to manufacture carbon dioxide in tanks that the real soda fountain was born. Baur was a pharmacist who started the Liquid Carbonic Co. in 1888 and eventually began to manufacture and market the Liquid Carbonic soda fountains in the early 1900’s.

According to Shrikant Deshpande, Vice President, Fontus Water Ltd, the order was secured against stiff competition from the likes of bigger and more known companies in the water treatment business. “Our reach led to the decision in our favour as we were able to install plants at any place defined by Big Cinemas”, he added. Executing the orders is a challenge in itself as plants need to be manufactured as per different water chemistries of different regions where Big Cinemas theatres are being set up. The order has led to the scaling of production facilities of the Fontus Plant at Faridabad as 25 more plants are needed to be supplied as per strict timelines. According to a representative of Big Cinemas, Fontus Water specialization in making standard reverse osmosis plants and their service capability helped Big Cinemas in placing complete trust in them. These standard plants are customized to suit specific on-site requirement of Big Cinemas.

By far the largest entertainment conglomerate in the country, Adlabs was founded in 1978 by Manmohan Shetty as a film processing unit. In 2001, Adlabs entered the multiplex business launching India's first IMAX theatre in Wadena, Mumbai. The company expanded by converting single-screen cinema halls into multiplexes like the famous Metro Adlabs in Mumbai. In 2005, Adlabs was acquired by ADAG (A Group Owned by Anil Ambani). In 2007, Adlabs acquired all the properties of Rave Cinemas, a cinema chain based in Kanpur. Currently, Big Cinemas operates more than 70 properties and close to 200 screens in more than 40 cities across India.
